A recent article in the Antigua Sun newspaper tells it all with regard to what Antigua accepts in terms of crime:

Crime kept at bay for Carnival
Thursday August 07 2008

The police are reporting a relatively crime-free Carnival despite a few minor incidents.

Head of the Strategic Communications Division (Stratcom) Inspector Cornelius Charles said the joint operation between the police and members of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) during the festivities yielded success. “With the exception of a shooting and a few other minor stabbing incidents the Carnival was relatively safe,” Charles said.

(Please no laughing!)

Perhaps the Minister of Tourism Lovell can pick this up using it on one of the many ads the country spends its poor peoples tax money on?

The ad might read like this:

Come to Antigua and enjoy Carnival. Your chances of experiencing some of our would renowned crime is now rated “four star”! And don’t forget, other than a few stabbings and shootings, repeated and non-stop home and business burglaries, and weekly armed home invasions, murder rates are high, but double homicides remain a rarity!

So we invite you to take your chances here in Antigua. Why go to Jamaica, where your chances of getting into the action of crime are slim to none. After all, they have built fences to keep you safe and out of the real action. We have the real thing here, in Antigua, although we are working hard to build our fences as fast as possible!

And to top off your vacation package, should you be injured on our beautiful island, we will offer you the experience of being treated at our outdated and broken down Halburton Hospital. You see , we have ripped off all the funds for a new facility which was planned for to serve our own community. We didn’t think that was very important, so although the culprits were exposed, guess who we indicted, NO ONE!

Like in most of our crime, we don’t want to hold anyone responsible. If we did, and we were caught in some impropriety, we might also be held responsible. So come one come all!

Antigua, land of 365 beaches, 406 armed home invasions, 875 burglaries, 904 cases of fraud, drugs of every kind for sale (we of course take no responsibility for this, and blame the Jamaicans), 5 cases of bitch slapping tourists, but only one double murder!

This is the second follow up report on the culprits who have been stealing all your money by way of manipulating oil prices.

Please note the dates of the previous two reports by Mokenman. Finally the mainstream press has gone to work to uncover what Mokenman has been saying for months!

Regulators had long classified a private Swiss energy conglomerate called Vitol as a trader that primarily helped industrial firms that needed oil to run their businesses.

But when the Commodity Futures Trading Commission examined Vitol’s books last month, it found that the firm was in fact more of a speculator, holding oil contracts as a profit-making investment rather than a means of lining up the actual delivery of fuel. Even more surprising to the commodities markets was the massive size of Vitol’s portfolio — at one point in July, the firm held 11 percent of all the oil contracts on the regulated New York Mercantile Exchange.

The discovery revealed how an individual financial player had gained enormous sway over the oil market without the knowledge of regulators. Other CFTC data showed that a significant amount of trading activity was concentrated in the hands of just a few speculators.

The CFTC, which learned about the nature of Vitol’s activities only after making an unusual request for data from the firm, now reports that financial firms speculating for their clients or for themselves account for about 81 percent of the oil contracts on NYMEX, a far bigger share than had previously been stated by the agency. That figure may rise in coming weeks as the CFTC checks the status of other big traders. (see the article in its entirety at Washingtonpost.com)
